Lord OakeshottLord Oakeshott has announced his resignation from the Liberal Democrat party after being threatened to face disciplinary action over leak of damaging poll against party leader.

The Lib Dem peer since the party’s inception in 198,1and close friend of the Business Secretary Vince Cable has quit the party and taken a leave of absence from the House of Lords, after admitting to have commissioned a poll showing Nick Clegg could lose his Commons seat in election.

Mr Oakeshott has also criticised Mr Clegg’s leadership as total disaster as the Lib Dems have become a party with “no roots, no principles and no values” under him.

The row has erupted soon after the Lib Dems’ terrible performance in the recently conducted European elections.

Lord Oakeshott has told he was leaving with a “heavy heart” and urged his former colleagues to save their political skins by ditching the Deputy Prime Minister before the general election.

The peer has also raised fresh questions about Mr Cable’s involvement in a plot to oust Mr Clegg, suggesting that Business Secretary already had the information regarding his commissioning research into how the party would fare with someone else in charge.

The party leader has described Lord Oakeshott’s actions as “totally unacceptable”.

And to add on the destruction, Mr Vince Cable has also joined the criticism, describing Lord Oakeshott’s behaviour as “inexcusable and unacceptable”, with the added clarification that Mr Oakeshott does not “speak or act” for him.

It was believed that Lord Oakeshott was angling for Mr Cable to take over as Lib Dem leader, a rumour Mr Cable has refused, saying: “I [have] made it absolutely clear there is no leadership issue as far as I’m concerned.”
