An informal search for a 65-year-old man with Parkinson’s disease and dementia finally succeeded after failed attempts of formal search for five days in a British Columbia forest. Jamie Sproule, of Vancouver Island, B.C., was found dehydrated but otherwise OK on Tuesday, i.e. the day after the official search for him was called off.

Sproule’s friends refused to give up after informal search was called off and managed to find him in the forest just 300 metres from his Comox Lake home. He was found unconscious in the middle of a thick patch of brush, having apparently fallen over a log. One of Sproule’s friends, Sophie Gilmore, explained that “I came through the thick brush into a clearing where it didn’t look like there should be a clearing, and all the brush was trampled down.” Gilmore added that “I could actually smell it before I saw it, and I saw Jamie, and I screamed, and he jumped.” Furthermore, she added that Sproule’s friends were looking for him because it “didn’t really feel like an option” for them to stop the search. “It’s been a really, really exhausting five days and we couldn’t ask for better news,” Gilmore said.

In addition to that, Sproule’s nephew who was also part of the informal team, Joe Turner, alleged that “we weren’t ready to give up.” Turner added that we “wouldn’t have expected to find him that deep in the woods.” He explained that “(it was) well outside what we would consider a reasonable area.”
