Foreign Secretary Philip HammondDowning Street spokesperson appears to contradict Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond’s earlier statement by saying on Thursday that Britain has not ruled out air strike action against Islamic State (IS) militants in Syria.

Mr Hammond has stated earlier during his visit to Berlin at a joint press conference with German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier: “Let me be clear: Britain will not be taking part in any air strikes in Syria. We have already had that discussion in our parliament last year and we won’t be revisiting that position.”

But Prime Minister David Cameron’s official spokesman has told that Mr Cameron has not ruled out anything by insisting that the Foreign secretary was in fact referring to last year’s Commons vote opposing air strikes against president Bashar Assad and that nothing had been ruled out in relation to IS. He has also added: “No decisions have been taken in that regard.”

Ministers of Mr Cameron’s Conservatives party are now demanding from the PM to come to the Commons to provide explanation over the matter.

A member of the Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, John Baron has said: “This reinforces the need for the Government to state clearly its policy to Parliament given that there appears to be a disparity between the Foreign Secretary and No 10.

“The issue of air strikes in Syria is of seminal importance.”

Mr Cameron has previously indicated his willingness to act against the militants to protect Britain’s national interest even without parliamentary approval, although Britain has so far limited to take any action against IS in Iraq providing humanitarian aid, arms for Kurdish fighters and logistical support for U.S. raids.
