Prime Minister David CameronPrime Minister David Cameron has refused to participate in the pre-elections televised debates unless the Green party are also included in the leaders’ debates following Ofcom ruling excluded the Greens from major parties list.

The conservative leader has voiced to add Green leader Natalie Bennett in the televised leaders debates with the current proposals only including the Conservatives, Labour, the Liberal Democrats and U.K. Independence Party (UKIP).

The suggested debates are planned to take place during April, ahead of May 7 vote.

On Thursday, media regulator Ofcom have published a draft ruling that the Green party is not a part of U.K.’s major political parties’ list subject to their performance in long term polling and recent election results.

In response the Green Party expressed its deep disappointment over the ruling as Ms Bennett has said: “The Green Party is deeply disappointed by this draft Ofcom ruling, not only for itself, but for the damage it risks doing to British democracy.”

Ofcom have also indicated that Ukip is likely to qualify for major party status in England and Wales, despite not having a record of significant success in past general elections, as it said: “Ukip’s performance in a number of other significant forms of election has, however, been stronger.”

However, Mr Cameron has dismissed the suggestion, saying: “The Greens are polling ahead of the Liberal Democrats — to me, that makes them a serious party.

I don’t think the current proposals work. You can’t have one minor party without having another minor party and I think that’s only logical and fair.”

Meanwhile, the Ukip leader Ngel Farage has attacked the Prime Minister over his attempt to avoid facing him in televised debates before May’s general election.

Mr Farage has tweeted: “Looks like Mr Cameron is a chicken running scared over the TV debates.”
