The Prince of Wales, Charles, has recently urged during a radio interview that people should build bridges between faiths in order to prevent the growing number of young people in Britain being radicalized. According to Charles, it was partly the temptation of risk and adventure that has resulted the growing numbers of people joining extremist organisations. However, Charles alleged that the “frightening part” was the role of the internet.

During an interview at BBC Radio 2’s Sunday Hour, Prince Charles pointed out that when he becomes King he may still be sworn in as Defender of the (Anglican) Faith, which spurs years of speculation that the title could be changed to encompass all faiths. Charles highlighted that he believes an important part of the role is to be a “protector” of every religion in multicultural Britain. The interview took place just before Charles is scheduled to leave for his six-day tour to the Middle East, i.e. a region under heavy threat from extremists such as the so-called Islamic State.

Inquired about radicalisation in Britain, Prince Charles pointed out that “well. of course, this is one of the greatest worries, I think, and the extent which this is happening is the alarming part. “And particularly in a country like ours where, you know, the values we hold dear. You think that the people who have come here, born here, go to school here, would abide by those values and outlooks.” He added that “the frightening part is that people can be so radicalised either by contact with somebody else or through the internet…I can see I suppose to a certain extent, some aspect of this radicalisation is a search for adventure and excitement at a particular age.”
