The Labour leader, Ed Miliband, has recently reiterated his remarks about the former Conservative treasurer, Lord Fink, in the Commons as he accused him of tax avoidance activities. Miliband stated that the Government “turned a blind eye to tax avoidance” and pointed out the former Conservative treasurer has acknowledged to have taken “vanilla, bland” measures to reduce his liabilities.
In response to a challenge by Lord Fink to repeat the claim he made during a bitter exchange in the House of Commons, Mr. Miliband partly repeated his claims regarding alleged tax avoidance linked to HSBC’s Swiss subsidiary. However, he just stopped short of repeating his Commons claim, which was protected by parliamentary privilege, that David Cameron was “a dodgy Prime Minister surrounded by dodgy donors.” Lord Fink called the accusation “untrue and defamatory,” while threatening to take legal action if he made it in public.
However during an interview later at the Evening Standard, Fink assured that he does not plan to not sue Mr. Miliband as he acknowledged to have engaged in tax avoidance, although it was at “the mildest end of the spectrum.” He explained that “what I did … was at the vanilla, bland, end of the spectrum.” Lord Fink revealed to have rejected expert advice that he could save a fortune by adopting “aggressive” avoidance measures. He explained that “I don’t even want to sue Ed Miliband. In my life I have been libelled a few dozen times and I have never sued anybody, even for some comments that were quite outrageous.”
