London Mayor, Boris Johnson, has called on the Chancellor to hand over massive financial powers to cities in order to help “detoxify” British politics. According to the mayor, Westminster is still going through a “very rocky period” and devolution would pay its part in “electrifying” the political scene.

Addressing the audience at the Brookings Institution in Washington DC, Mr. Johnson stressed that the Treasury had “nothing to fear” from reforms while insisting that it would gather immense support from Winston Churchill. Mr. Johnson highlighted that “to get it done you simply have to get the Treasury to understand that they make more money out of this,” adding that “they have nothing to fear.” He pointed out that “even a Labour mayor couldn’t possibly make a hash of this. Winston Churchill would have got it done.”

Mr. Johnson explained that devolving fiscal powers would allow cities to push growth policies on their own rather than having to go “begging for penny packets of funding.” He stressed that the move would be fiscally neutral and so would be a “no lose” move for the Treasury. He alleged that “when you look at the state of politics in Britain there is no question that it is going through a very rocky period. Politicians are not thought generally to be in touch with people, there’s a lack of communication, people don’t feel the politicians are answering their needs.” He stressed that “devolution is obviously the way forward.”
