Syria-bound son of Rochdale Labour councillor Shakil Ahmed, Waheed Ahmed, has been put on a coach to return to Antalya, i.e. 509 miles west of Hatay, from where he is expected to fly back to the UK. Waheed Ahmed, along with other eight from Rochdale including four adults and four children, had been detained in Hatay near the Syrian border since Wednesday, 1 April. According to councillor Shakil Ahmed, he “wanted his son to come home as soon as possible.”

The MP for Rochdale, Simon Danczuk, has confirmed that Mr Ahmed is being deported back to the UK on Sunday night. Greater Manchester Police and the North West Counter Terrorism force have launched an extensive investigation into why the group apparently attempted to enter Syria. Police has assured that all nine would return to the UK “in due course.” Assistant Chief Constable, Ian Wiggett, has specifically mentioned that the primary concern is the “safety and welfare” of the children as the efforts are being made to ensure a “full safeguarding strategy.”

Councillor Shakil Ahmed mentioned in a statement that “my son is a good Muslim and his loyalties belong to Britain, so I don’t understand what he’s doing there.” He stressed that “if I thought for a second that he was in danger of being radicalised, I would have reported him to the authorities,” adding that”he’s studying a degree in politics and sociology at Manchester University and has a good future ahead of him.”
