The Labour Party has announced its candidate for next year’s Mayor of London election, i.e. 45-year-old Sadiq Khan. The left-leaning lawmaker was the first Muslim to attend cabinet, supports Jeremy Corbyn and recently took over as the Labour Party’s new national leader on Saturday.

Mr. Khan’s competitor is yet to be announced by the Conservative party, who will face him in the May 2016 election. The former London Mayor, Boris Johnson, left the position for a seat in Britain’s national parliament and is considered a possible replacement of Prime Minister David Cameron, as the leader of the Conservative party, after he steps down before the 2020. With support of six unions and former Labour mayor Ken Livingstone, Khan was able to secure 59 percent of the vote and form a huge lead over the runner-up former minister, Tessa Jowell, with 41 percent.

Khan grew up in a deprived neighborhood in the southwest London area of Tooting so he is campaigning on a platform to tackle the capital’s shortage of cheap housing and rising air pollution. In his remarks so far, Khan has opposed a third runway at Heathrow airport and vowed to ban fracking in London. He says that “my priorities for Londoners are clear: an affordable and secure home to rent or buy,” adding that “more jobs with higher wages for the lowest paid, making it easier to set up and run a successful business, reducing the cost of commuting and making London’s environment safer, healthier and less polluted.”
