A house owner has survived after her home was burnt to ground in a massive gas explosion in Penn Road, Wolverhampton. The 76-year-old pensioner miraculously survived with cuts and bruises even though she was stuck in the rubble for more than 90 minutes as the blast totally wrecked the house. Sources confirm that the women was saved only because she hid before the washing machine that shielded her from falling debris as the house caved in.

According to the West Midlands Ambulance Service, the house owner was “extraordinarily lucky” to escape with cuts, bruises and a broken ankle. Whereas the nearby residents revealed that the sound of the explosion was like a “bomb going off”. A spokesperson for the ambulance service explained that “when you consider the level of damage to the property, she was extraordinarily lucky not to have been more seriously injured.” Thereafter, air ambulance doctors arrived at the scene to inspect the women who was later taken by land ambulance to Wolverhampton’s New Cross Hospital.

In a statement issued by the ambulance service, it was mentioned that “due to the level of damage, ambulance staff worked closely with firefighters to rescue an elderly woman who was trapped in the property.” It was added that “while the careful and methodical rescue was taking place, paramedics from the Hazardous Area Response Team were providing the woman with treatment in situ.” Furthermore, the statement alleged that “she was carried down from the wreckage and assessed by the doctor from the air ambulance in the back of an ambulance,” adding that “while a very difficult incident, the teamwork between ambulance, fire and police crews on scene was exemplary.”
