warsi supports remain campaign over brexit’s ‘xenophobic campaigns’A prominent Conservative and a former Foreign Office minister, Baroness Warsi, has withdrawn her support from Brexit and sided with the Remain camp ahead of the EU referendum. While making the announcement, Warsi alleged that “we cannot just carry on irresponsibly running divisive campaigns and xenophobic campaigns,” adding that she changed her mind because she was turned off by what she described as the spreading of “hate and xenophobia” by the campaign in favour of leaving the European Union.

Warsi explained that Nigel Farage’s controversial anti-migrant poster was the tipping point for her to switch sides. The UKIP poster showed migrants queuing to get into Europe under the slogan “Breaking Point”. Warsi stated that “we cannot just carry on irresponsibly running divisive campaigns and xenophobic campaigns and campaigns that create hatred in our communities because long after the political bus has moved on unfortunately we leave behind us divided communities and those have long-term consequences for us.” She added that “so as politicians we have a responsibility to campaign responsibly and only then can we govern responsibly.”

Even though Mr Farage claimed that “frankly, it all looks like a bit of a put up job to me” and Lady Warsi never wanted to leave the EU, she replied that she was rethinking about the tone of the Leave camp’s message for a number of months. She mentioned that “what we have consistently heard in the last two months is that the Turks are coming and the terrorists are coming and the Syrians are coming and the refugees are coming and the Muslims are coming and it is not the kind of campaign that we should be running,” adding that “it is not the vision we should have for a pro-Brexit Britain.”
