dover mp elphicke suggests to use caution with france over border securityThe Conservative MP for Dover, Charlie Elphicke, has requested the British government to use precaution and avoid any “tit-for-tat” battles with France over border security as the home secretory for both countries meet today. Amber Rudd, the British home secretary, is anticipated to tell Bernard Cazeneuve, her French counterpart, on Tuesday that the UK government would not accept any changes to the Le Touquet agreement, i.e. a reciprocal arrangement allowing both border officials to check the documents of migrants on the other side of the border.

The president of the region around Calais, Xavier Bertrand, announced on Monday that the Le Touquet agreement should end because “it’s not possible to keep people here without a new agreement between the two governments.” Reports claim that Britain could respond to such a move by reviewing other elements of security cooperation with France, but Elphicke has called for caution.

In his remarks, Elphicke stated that that “France, clearly, has suffered some serious terrorist atrocities, and we need to stand with France,” adding that “threatening a tit-for-tat is not the right thing to do.” He pointed out that “what we need to do is work more closely together. Next year it’s likely there will be a change of [French] government and we need to understand what it is that they want to achieve. I think what they want to achieve is, as we in Dover want, is to see a lasting solution to a problem that has gone on too long.”
