The U.N peacekeeping force is to retire from Haiti on October 5. The Brazilian Prime Minister Celso Amorim, who leads the peacekeeping mission stressed on transferring security to the locals has called for a 15% cut in the U.N peacekeeping force comprising of 12,000 soldiers. He mentioned this at a meeting in Montevideo concerning the future of the U.N mission in Haiti.The U.N mission in Haiti is called Minustah.
The meeting was held following the news of sexual abuse of a young Haitian man by the Uruguayan peacekeepers within the U.N base. The leaked video has stirred up serious anger in the locals who are now calling out for complete U.N withdrawal.
U.N. special envoy to Haiti.Bill Clinton while condemning the attack has praised the U.N mission’s work in Haiti and said “I don’t want what happened — that terrible incident that happened to the young man — to be put off on all of Minustah, and all of the soldiers, or even all the Uruguayans.”
Mujica has also expressed his concern over the incident and asserted his approval in the withdrawal of Minustah. However, Matelly has urged economic development work by U.N in Haiti.
The U.N peacekeeping force has been present in Haiti since 2004, following the oust of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide and has been instrumental in bringing stability to the region by permitting a democratically elected president serve two full terms for the first time in Haitian history.
