
The leader of the banned opposition group, the Iran Democratic Front has been sentenced to eight years in prison, according to reports.According to the Human Rights Activists in Iran organisation, political activist Heshmatollah Tabarzadi has been acquitted of the charge of “disrupting public order,” which means that a previous nine-year jail-term plus 74 lashes were reduced to eight years in prison following appeal.
Tabarzadi had previously been sentenced to eleven years in prison for his role in the student protests that erupted in the country in July 1999. He spent nine years in prison, two of which were spent in solitary confinement.
The activist has also received a ten-year ban on social activism.
