At approximately 1:30 pm on Tuesday, June 14, 2011, officers from the Third District responded to the 1600 block of Irving Street, NW to assist members with the Department of Mental Health. Upon arrival, the officers were confronted by a male subject who attacked one of the officers with a sharp weapon – stabbing the officer in the arm. The subject then barricaded himself in a room of the apartment.

Emergency Response Team (ERT) was called to the scene and responders attempted to negotiate with the subject for several hours. Officers from ERT gained entry into the residence and attempted to take the subject into custody. The subject attacked the officers with a sharp object, which resulted in an officer firing his service weapon striking the subject. The suspect was transported to Howard University Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The decedent has been identified as 55-year-old Jean E. Louis of the 1600 block of Irving Street, NW.

The officer who was stabbed in the arm was treated and released from a local hospital. There were no additional injuries to other officers or citizens.

This matter is under investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department’s Internal Affairs Force Investigations Branch.
