One hurt as Greyhound bus avoids moose lands in BC swamp

The Clearwater RCMP responded to a single vehicle collision on Hwy 5 early Wednesday morning, involving a Greyhound bus going off the highway after encountering a crossing moose.

All passengers and driver were able exit the bus with one passenger suffering a fractured limb with minor injuries only to a small number of other passengers.

The Clearwater RCMP received the report of the collision at around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday June 22, 2011. RCMP, BC Ambulance and the Clearwater Highway Rescue team attended to the scene approximately 25 km south of Clearwater. The greyhound bus was southbound on Hwy 5 with with 18 passengers plus driver ended up off the highway left side and into a swamp, when the bus encountered a moose crossing the highway. The bus remained upright in about 5 ft of water, with all occupants making it off the bus safely to await emergency crews. One passenger suffered a fractured limb and transported to the Clearwater hospital via ambulance. All others were shuttled via a second bus to the Clearwater hospital to be cleared medically. The highway was closed temporarily, for short period and is now fully re-opened.

The Clearwater RCMP are continuing their investigation into the collision, it’s unclear at this time whether the animal was actually hit or the driver avoided it.
