Alberta man charged with murder for pushing his wife off a boat

A charge of First Degree Murder was laid on Monday, August 8th, 2011 against Peter Ernest Edward Beckett, 54, from Westlock Alberta. The murder charge is related to the death of Mr. Beckett’s wife, Laura Letts-Beckett which occurred on Upper Arrow Lake on August 18th, 2010.

Police were called to the Shelter Bay Provincial Park shortly after 8:00 pm after receiving report that Laura Letts-Beckett was standing in a boat when she fell over. The husband and wife were out in a small zodiac, fishing in the upper Arrow Lakes. CPR attempts failed to resuscitate her.

The Southeast District Major Crime Unit has been actively investigating this homicide since November 2010. All investigative findings were forwarded to Crown Counsel which resulted in this murder charge being laid against Mr. Beckett.

Mr. Beckett was arrested on August 12th, 2011 without incident after leaving a property near Christina Lake, BC and made his first court appearance in Kelowna Provincial Court that afternoon. BECKETT has been remanded to custody to appear again on Thursday, August 18th, 2011 by video.

  1. It’s regretable that the news has carried such a happy looking picture of this man, who if proven guilty, was really a very evil person who carried out a premeditated crime in the suspected murder of a winderful, trusting, and very caring woman
