In lieu of the upcoming 10th anniversary of the 9/11 catastrophe, 114 audio recording have been released. These 2 hour long recordings highlight the desperation and chaos that emerged right after the attacks. The recordings have captured the urgency at the time of 9/11 amongst the people who had to deal with the dilemma.

The recordings available in the National Archives had never been aired completely before. This is the first time the entire audio is being released to the public. The audio recreates the flow of events that took place on 9th September 2001. Starting from the time when the pilot reported to the controllers at Boston to Mohamed Atta’s voice telling everyone to remain silent, the time when the first flight was hijacked to the hijacking of Flight 77.

The recordings clearly outline the efforts of the ground controllers as well as reactions of the people involved. In short, the entire 9/11 experience is told, not through interviews and analysis but through the victims and those involved in the attack.

Apart from these 114 recordings, two of them still remain unpublished at the National Archives. One of them is of the United Airlines Flight 93 that crashed in Pennsylvania and it has not been released due to objection from the families involved. Second recording is of the phone call between Vice President Dick Cheney and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. Another unpublished item includes the summary of interview conducted with President George W.Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.

Investigative records are still sealed at the National Archives and occupy an area of 575 cubic feet.
