The state of North Carolina is the only southeastern state that does not have a ban on same-sex in its constitution. However, it has been reported that this might be changed and a ban on same-sex marriage would be included in the constitution. This change is to be debated by the Republican lawmakers who will be in charge of the constitution for the first time in 140 years.

This amendment will allow the voters of the state to make the state law of marriage between man and a woman, a part of the state constitution as well. It has been reported that the people of North Carolina are presently divided on the issue of same-sex marriage.

President Obama won in North Carolina by a small margin of only 13,000 in 2008. The amendment is thought to being conservatives to the fore to vote in the sate. In 2012 however, the state has no part in the U.S Senate race.

Ferrel Guillory, director of the Program on Public Life at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill said in an interview that ” There’s no doubt that there would be some advantage in motivating voters for Republican candidates.”
