The U.S Embassy in Afghanistan came under Taliban attack on Tuesday at 1.30 pm and continued till the evening. According to Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid his group targeted "the U.S. Embassy, governmental organizations and other foreign organizations."
The fighting, that included the use of rocket-propelled grenades, gunfire and suicide bombs spread throughout the capital of Afghanistan. Hashmatullah Stanakzai, a spokesman for the Kabul police said, "This is the first time that all parts of Kabul are under attack."
Apart from the U.S Embassy, traffic control-office, high school and a school bus were also hit. As per the reports of Afghan Public Health Ministry, 1 civilian was killed and 18 wounded in the attacks. Three police officers have also been killed in the attacks.
Hilary Clinton, U.S Secretary of State, while commenting on the civilians and U.S. diplomats who are working in Afghanistan said "They will not be intimidated by this kind of cowardly attack. They work hard every day along with their Afghan colleagues to help children go to school, to help save mothers’ lives at childbirth, to build roads, to assist farmers."
NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen was of the view that these attacks had been executed to conflict with the transfer of security responsibility to the Afghan forces. He said, "We are witnessing that the Taliban try to test the transition but they can’t stop it. Transition is on track and it will continue."
