Diplomats finally set the rules and regulations for the party leadership race. The foremost rule states that candidates will have to renounce their positions as parliamentary critics. Short-term chief Nycole Turmel announced the news on Wednesday.
Moreover, deputy leaders Thomas Mulcair and Libby Davies, who every now and then substitute the leader when he is not present, are exceptions to the rule and will get to keep their titles if they choose to take part in the contest. Also, the MPs who outline cabinet ministers and have a critic history or other parliamentary roles, including presiding parliamentary commissions, would be asked to turn down those duties until the headship is decided March 24, 2012.
Secretary of the opposition leader, Brad Lavigne said: “Deputy Leader, there’s no definition of roles and responsibilities — it is up to the individual — that therefore that’s OK to maintain. That was the decision of the leader, to delineate between those responsibilities that had roles and responsibilities clearly laid out, and those that did not.”
The party will have to meet several new challenges, starting with the conference before their first full session as the Official Opposition, and they’ll show up in the House of Commons for the first time after the death of former leader Jack Layton.
MP Olivia Chow informed her colleagues their backing meant a lot to her. She said: “And of course you know it means the world to Jack. Wishing you the wisdom and strength that these will give to you.”
