Dakota Meyer, former U.S marine officer will be awarded the Medal of Honor due to his initiatives in Iraq and Afghanistan. He will be the third living recipient of the award. The other two are Army Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta and Army Sgt. 1st Class Leroy Petry.

Dakota advanced in to a heavy-fire zone in Afghanistan’s Ganjgal Valley, five times in order to rescue the victims and save their lives. Meyer ended up saving 13 Marines and Army soldiers and 23 Afghan soldiers. He also attacked the insurgents, killing eight of them. Despite being burnt and hurt himself, Meter had the courage to rescue the bodies of four of the martyred comrades from the battle zone.

At that time, Dakota was employed as a member of the Marine Embedded Training Team 2-8 in the province of Kunar in Afghanistan. He was serving the Operation Enduring Freedom.

While recounting the events of the day of the gunfire, Meyer said “I didn’t think I was going to die, I knew I was. I was just going to keep fighting until they got me. I wasn’t going to sit there and lay down and let them win. That was the only thing on my mind was how to get those guys out. I would’ve done it again.”

Meyer saved 36 lives with courage and determination.
