The support staff of Ontario’s community colleges will get back to work after a gritty strike for 18 days. Employees have finally signed a tentative settlement on Sunday. Roughly eight thousand OPSEU employees would get back to work at province’s 24 colleges on Tuesday.
More details related to the agreement are not to be disclosed until after a confirmation vote, which has not been scheduled yet.
According to the chair of the colleges’ bargaining team, Gerry Barker, “We are very pleased that we reached a negotiated settlement. We look forward to welcoming all of our valued employees back to the colleges where we can again work together for the success of our students.”
The resolution was finalized after two days of negotiations. The staff walked off the working days before the new school year began, disturbing curriculum, services and transportation for students heading to their colleges.
According to union anticipations, nearly 500,000 college students were disturbed by the pointless strike.
This was the first time since 1979 that Ontario’s support staff went on strike.
