Canada’s MPs went back to work in the House of Commons on Monday, likely to be prevailed by active debate on important matters – the financial system, crime, Libya, gun control, and defense at the Canada-U.S. border.

Representatives from several parties came to Parliament Hill on Monday morning geared up for a session in which Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s administration will, after five years regime, now have complete charge of the passage of bills, accrediting the majority it now holds.

Monday was to start with a melancholy reminder, in the memory of late NDP leader Jack Layton.

Tories’ top officials and Opposition NDP have by now sketched their precedence for the impending session. According to Government House Leader Peter Van Loan, he was obliged with a “strong mandate” in the May 2 ballot.

Van Loan said: “Canadians expect us to back up our commitments with action. This fall, that’s exactly what we will be doing. Canadians expect us to focus on measures to create more jobs and economic growth. Our economic action plan is working. We must stay on track.”

Whereas, NDP House Leader Thomas Mulcair said: “It’s simply pandering to their base. The facts are that crime is on the decrease in Canada. They seem to be stealing a page from their opposite numbers in the U.S. It’s a backward step in a country that has always been far more understanding.”
