Gays in Military IngrAccording to sources, the legal ban on openly gay service in the military will be lifted on Tuesday. Currently the military is operating under the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy which allows gays to serve in the military, however does not permit to openly reveal their orientation and no senior is allowed to question them.

However, the policy is going to change from Tuesday, at exact one past midnight.

Pentagon press secretary George Little said that the military was properly equipped to handle the change of policy. “No one should be left with the impression that we are unprepared. We are prepared for repeal,” he said.

President Barack Obama signed the law last December, and in July he affirmed that lifting the ban will not harm the military’s ability to fight.

Zeke Stokes, spokesman for Service Members Legal Defense Network, said “In the United States and perhaps around the world, the military tends to be one of the more conservative institutions in society.  For the military to embrace this, for the American people to see the military embrace this, make it work, see it work. I think it makes a difference in other civil rights issues. In every country where same-sex marriage is legal, open military service preceded it.”

A leading advocate, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, said Monday that, “Our nation will finally close the door on a fundamental unfairness for gays and lesbians, and indeed affirm equality for all Americans.”
