The Harper government listed extensive criminal-reform legislation Tuesday. This reform is supposed to make Canadian a safer place.

Reportedly, the crime bill, called the Safe Streets and Communities Act, includes nine individual justice bills. Most of these bills were initially launched in the last parliamentary session but Tory administration could not get them approved.

On Tuesday, Justice Minister Rob Nicholson said in Brampton, Ont. that the most recent legislation will incorporate procedures to shield children from sexual offenders, will mark structured drug crime and will clean-up young crooks.

Moreover, the legislation will also cart off the alternative of house arrest for those who are involved in serious violent and property crimes such as sexual assault, human-trafficking, arson, break and enter, child-luring and kidnapping.

Nicholson says, “Since coming into office, our government has accomplished a great deal when it comes to cracking down on crime and better protecting Canadians. But we know more needs to be done. Canadians want and deserve to feel safe in their homes and their communities.”

The administration has promised to pass the bill within the first 100 sitting days of the new parliament, counting Monday. Whereas the opposition has pledged to go up against, referring to Statistics Canada data that implies crime is in fact reducing in this country, the Conservatives now have a majority in the House of Commons, and no longer need the opposition’s support.
