A tentative agreement has been reached with the teachers who were on strike in Washington since the past seven days. The agreement was reached after the intervention of the Governor.
“There’s a tentative agreement, which we will now vote on,” Union spokesman Rich Wood said. “All of the big issues, class size, teacher pay and transfers we were able to agree on.”
The teachers had gone on strike on September 13 due to disagreement over staffing policies, class size and salaries. The major consequence of that was that classes had remained closed to the 28,700 students enrolled in the state’s third-largest school.
The intervention of Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire was the last chance to make amends between the teachers and the school district. Earlier on all negotiations between the two parties came to a standstill, even after a new contract was offered to the teachers. The meeting in the Governor’s office lasted about seven hours.
“This agreement provides a long-term solution, meets the districts needs and ensures teachers remain proud to report to their classroom every day,” Gregoire said in a statement.
