According to the Edmonton police, the woman who died in the explosion at Bethany Seniors Home was basically a homicide. 83-year-old Anna Fedorio and 64-year-old Ken Kopiak passed away due to an explosion when fire ripped through the seven-story building at 99th Street and 83rd Avenue at 12:30 a.m. on Aug. 2.

In the incident, seven people were reported injured and transported to the hospital after the fire which displaced 59 seniors. The police department now believes Kopiak lit his car on fire in the parking area and went up to his apartment where he spread gasoline throughout the suite. Kopiak was found dead in the suite, but the blast also caused the death of Kopiak’s neighbour Fedorio.

Det. Dwayne Lakusta says the inquiry took time due to the exclusivity of the crime scene.

He said: “It took a great deal of time and work to gather all the necessary information, and to examine all the evidence. A large number of resources – including post-blast analysts, forensics investigators, arson and fire investigators, and the Medical Examiners office – were utilized to conclude this investigation.”
