Public Safety Minister Vic Toews released an internal memo, which indicates that trashing the long-gun registry might encourage firearms trafficking across the border.

Toews gave a statement Tuesday at a House of Commons committee hearing on Bill C-19 which is determined to end the $2-billion registry and wipe out all trace of its existence.

He maintained that removing the registry could result in the illegal trade of firearms as it would also eradicate the verification process that ascertains importers are officially licensed to possess the firearms they are importing in Canada.

Toews says the analysis is “factually flawed” and “incorrect” and said he has asked his deputy minister to go over it.

“The analysis of whether or not something is restricted or prohibited or a non-restricted firearm has nothing to do with the registry,” he said.

On the contrary, there are lobbies that are working in the favour of the registry elimination process.

Barbara Byers of the Canadian Labour Congress said: “Since the Firearms Act was introduced, the rate of women murdered by a firearm by an intimate partner has decreased by 69%, that’s not just making women feel safe, it’s making them be safe.”
