Tony Rezko sentenced to JailFormer lobbyist and real estate businessman Tony Rezko was set to be sentenced on Tuesday, more than three years after being convicted of fraud and corruption.

Once influential in Chicago politics as an adviser for former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, Rezko was charged in 2006 with attempting to extort money from companies contracted by the Illinois Teachers Retirement System Board and the Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board.

In early 2008, he was arrested for violating the conditions of his bond by failing to disclose information about overseas finances. The same year, he was found guilty of 16 counts out of two dozen for fraud, money laundering and corruption charges.

Sentencing was delayed while prosecutors sought to gain information from Rezko, who chose to go to prison immediately after his conviction, to use against Blagojevich.

The former governor was convicted this year of pay-to-play politics and trying to sell the U.S. Senate seat vacated by President Barack Obama.

According to prosecutors, Blagojevich conspired with aides, Rezko and other associates to use the office of the governor for financial gain, including by directing contracts related to refinancing state pension obligation funds, to a company whose lobbyist agreed to provide kickbacks to Rezko.

Rezko, who first gained national attention during a 2008 presidential debate between Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, is seeking leniency and consideration for the years he spent detained at Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago.
