Britain seems to be supporting Ottawa’s campaign against European penalties on its oilsands fuel, urging environmentalists to mark Britain Canada’s ‘partner in crime,’ says a British media report.

“This will be among the biggest single environmental decisions the Cameron government makes,” Bill McKibben, a U.S. environmentalist said.

According to ‘The Guardian’ newspaper, Shell and BP have been convincing the administration of PM David Cameron to boost Canada’s opposition against the European proposal. Reportedly, 15 high-rank meetings and numerous communications have taken place since September between Ottawa and London.

John Sauven, executive director of Greenpeace UK, said: “The scale of oil industry lobbying exposed in these documents is quite extraordinary. It’s especially worrying that Baker held a secret meeting with Shell about this key European vote on tar sands. But worse still, he’s now covering up what was discussed.”

Moreover, Guardian emphasizes that U.K. and Canada’s collective resistance against the European proposal puts the U.K. in a minority among EU countries and will be extremely embarrassing as a new round of global negotiations on climate change start in Durban, South Africa on Monday.

“It is very disappointing that the U.K. government is supporting Canada’s efforts and we hope it has a rethink and puts tackling climate change ahead of Canada’s trade interests when it comes to vote on the European commission’s commonsense proposal,” says Colin Baines, toxic fuels campaign manager at the Co-operative.
