Eleven employees of nuclear power plant at Pickering, Ont. were fired after they allegedly indulged in “drug-related activity” in office hours. According to the Ontario government and the provincial power authority, citizens of the state were not put in danger as the employees were all support team at the plant.
Ontario Power Generation said in a statement: “When allegations were made of drug-related activity — and it should be emphasized these are still only allegations — we took prompt action to ensure there was not a safety issue and that the plant and the public were protected… After an internal investigation, coordinated with the police, we validated this was not a safety issue and was not a question of fitness for duty.”
The employees were fired on November 18 over charges of drug abuse and violating Ontario Power Generation’s code of conduct.
“I have been informed that the employees in question were support staff with no role in operating or controlling the plant,” Ontario Energy Minister Chris Bentley said.
He added: “I’ve spoken with (Ontario Power Generation) CEO Tom Mitchell, who has advised me that at no time was safety or security compromised at the Pickering OPG facility… Mr. Mitchell assured me that OPG has and will continue to co-operate with police regarding this matter… I asked that OPG ensure that all information possible is shared with the public.”
