Chief Theresa Spence of Attawapiskat says the Canadian government’s infliction of third-party management on the troubled community, Attawapiskat, near James Bay is evidently ‘political deflection’.

On Thursday, Spence said: “It is incredible that the Harper government’s decision is that instead of offering aid and assistance to Canada’s First Peoples, their solution is to blame the victim.”

According to PM Stephen Harper, the long-term goal is self-government for indigenous communities. Earlier this week, the Conservatives took charge of public funds from Attawapiskat, raising concerns about the health, safety and financial mismanagement of 2,000 Attawapiskats.

Attawapiskat has been fighting with a housing shortage that has forced families to live in sordidness. The region exasperated that the government has focused on the money and not on civilized support.

PM Harper says it is not easy to get self-government for aboriginal communities over night; however, he is dedicated to continuing the work towards that goal.

Harper is likely to meet with the Assembly of First Nations next month.
