A man who died while heli-skiing in B.C. has been identified as 45-year-old Ronald Greg Sheardown from Stouffville, Ont. Sheardown was married to Cindy Sheardown for 20 years and had kids aged 15, 12 and 10. He was recently promoted to head Lafarge’s Dubai office.

According to the RCMP, Sheardown was in a group of 11 skiers on their sixth run of the day when they triggered an avalanche. Three of them were buried in the snow but could be escaped; however, Sheardown was found unconscious.

The deceased’s sister, Michelle Sheardown-Tanzos said: “Greg loved the world and anything in it. It’s the sport he’s done since he was a kid. He loved it and his kids skied, too. He loved the outdoors. Any challenge he took head-on in life.

“Earlier in 2011, with the uprising in Egypt, he transferred to Dubai. It’s very, very difficult.”

The tragice incident is under investigation by the RCMP and the B.C. Coroners Service.

Sheardown’s funeral will be held Friday or Saturday in Bolton, Ont.

Earlier last week, Duncan MacKenzie, 30, a long-time ski patroller, was killed in a snowslide east of Pemberton, B.C.

The Canadian Avalanche Centre has been warning that mild temperatures have increased avalanche risks throughout British Columbia.
