A man who was travelling with a bomb in his vehicle in Ottawa’s Glebe neighbourhood has been sentenced to four years in jail Thursday.

It was near midnight when 36-year-old Chad Baillargeon was stopped by the cops early last year on Third Avenue. He was driving with headlights off and that was why police officers asked him to pull over.

Baillargeon asked the police officer to find his documents of identification in the trunk of his vehicle. Moments later, patrol officers discovered a bomb inside his trunk.

According to police, the officer saw a green tool box with two paper rolls glues to the bottom and an alarm clock with wires sticking out.

The officer said all bomb components were there; however, a chemical examination established the explosive couldn’t blow up.

Crown Robert Wadden says it doesn’t matter. “Under the criminal code, if you’ve got the parts…if you intend to use it…then it’s a crime.”

Baillargeon was being paid to explode the bomb at a home in Quebec, according to a statement of facts. He estimated that it could destroy an area of 3,000 square feet.

Baillargeon pleaded guilty to carrying explosives with an objective of jeopardizing lives.
