A 39-year-old Canadian has been reported dead in Mexico. Late Ximena Osegueda belonged to British Columbia. She was completing her Hispanic studies doctorate in the beach town of Huatulco in Oaxaca state, 500 kilometres southeast of Mexico City.
According to the Mexican news media, Osegueda’s family reported her missing on Dec. 16. On Thursday, police announced finding two bodies – Osegueda and her partner Alejandro Alvarado – on Dec. 27. Allegedly, Osegueda’s home was robbed. A number of appliances and a minivan were among the stolen goods, says local police.
One of Osegueda’s friends told the media that nobody reached her family for ransom. She said the region is troubled by violence resulting from drug trafficking. Osegueda’s friends have expressed their misery on the social media and a memorial ceremony in Huatulco is planned for the weekend.
Late Osegueda completed her graduation at McGill University in Montreal and later taught undergraduate courses, including Latin American history, introduction to political science and interstate conflict in Latin America at the University del Mar in Mexico.
“I am looking at how this myth has morphed from its first publication, in the 17th century, until today,” Osegueda wrote on her UBC profile page.
The Department of Foreign Affairs has warned Canadians travelling to Mexico to go there with a high degree of caution “due to a deteriorating security situation in many parts of the country.”
