A fire erupted last week at a Unity State based oil field resulting into the massive destruction of a water pond used to filter the oil tanks and the transmission pipeline.
The fire destroyed part of the company’s transmission pipeline but luckily never reached the main production area which flow oil to the North. The accident could have been worse if the other 35 adjacent oil wells were still operational.
While speaking to journalists at the Unity oil filed, the Unity State Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Mr. William Garjang Geng said, “the Government of the Republic of South Sudan and the State government have to lay down procedures and policies for the safety and protection of its oil from any form of destruction.”
Geng also stated that, “oil production in Unity State’s Unity oil filed and the mid-field have reduced from 95,000 barrels per day in 2010 and dropped to 60,000 barrels per day in November 2011.
Two week before the South Sudan secession in July 2011, oil companies’ staff working in Unity Oil field evacuated the area and left a big gap due to lack of engineers accept none Sudanese who remained.
Geng urged the Greater Nile Oil Company at Tharjiath oil field to take lead in controlling the pipeline and to ensure that everything related to oil production was functioning.
He also requested the National Ministry of Energy and Mining Republic of South Sudan to urgently employ more experts in the oil companies.
