Mother of late Oscar Bartholomew grieved at the funeral of his young son, who was allegedly tortured to death by the Grenada police officers.

Hundreds of people mourned Monday including Grenada’s Prime Minister Tillman Thomas, Opposition Leader Keith Mitchell, and the commissioner of the Royal Grenada Police Force, Willem Thomson.

As the distressed mother, Andrianne, walked up to the casket where his son was lying in a church in the hamlet of Crochu, she cried out in sorrow while her loved ones came forward to comfort her.

“Why, Oscar, why?” she cried. “Why? Why? Why? I don’t know why.”

She later slumped in her seat, resting her head on a relative’s shoulder, totally worn out.

The Toronto man was eulogized as someone who was kind and loving.

“He was not a perfect person, our family was never a perfect family,” said his brother Peron Taitt. “(But) he was an exceptional man with a big heart — always caring for everybody. He loved life.”

According to Roslyn Charles, Bartholomew’s friend from Toronto, Bartholomew was a “quiet” and careful person. He said: “I’ve never seen this guy in any trouble.”

Five Grenada officers are charged with manslaughter. They are likely to make bail on Friday; however, if convicted of manslaughter, they face a maximum 15 years in prison.
