Investigators with the York Regional Police Drugs and Vice Unit obtained their first conviction for the specific charge of human trafficking after a 28-year-old Richmond Hill man was sentenced today following a guilty plea on Monday.

On Friday, January 13, 2012, Jason Reid, appeared before The Honourable Justice Richard Blouin at the Ontario Court of Justice in Newmarket and was sentenced to four years in prison, in addition to the 107 days of pre-trial custody he has already served. He has also been issued a lifetime weapons prohibition and been ordered to provide a mandatory DNA sample.

During an earlier court appearance on Monday, January 9, 2012, Mr. Reid pleaded guilty to Human Trafficking, Possession of a Loaded Firearm and Possession of Firearm While Prohibited.

Officers with the York Regional Police Drugs and Vice Unit arrested Mr. Reid on Thursday, September 29, 2011, after an investigation revealed the accused had procured a 22-year-old female victim, forced her to perform sexual acts at a Toronto spa for money and turn all of her earnings over to him.

On the same date, a search warrant was executed at Mr. Reid’s residence in the Town of Richmond Hill and officers seized a handgun, sawed-off shotgun and ammunition.

In November 2005, the federal government passed Bill C-49 and created three new indictable offences related to human trafficking. The legislation prohibits the act of human trafficking, the receipt of financial gain from human trafficking and destroying or withholding an individual’s documents to facilitate human trafficking.

People committing sexual acts for money are often victims of crime through violence, threats of violence, coercion and trickery. York Regional Police is committed to investigating all incidents relating to human trafficking and providing assistance to victims who are affected by this crime.
