A 14-year-old girl is dead following a two vehicle collision at 10:40 a.m. at 98 Avenue east of 91 Street.

The teen was a passenger in a sports car that was traveling eastbound on 98 Avenue coming up the hill when for reasons unknown at this time to traffic investigators the vehicle crossed into the westbound lanes of traffic. The car was hit by a small minivan traveling in the westbound lanes.

The teen was transported to hospital but succumbed to her injuries at 12:50 p.m. The adult male driver of the car was also taken to hospital. There is no word on his injuries at this time. The female occupant of the minivan remained at the scene of the collision. Her injuries did not require her to be taken to hospital.

Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in this collision. Traffic investigators are trying to determine if speed or road conditions played a role. As it is early in the investigation it hasn’t been determined yet if charges will be laid.

There were two other cars that became part of the collision scene but did not in anyway cause the collision. None of the occupants in these vehicles suffered injuries.

This is Edmonton’s second traffic fatality for 2012.
