Mitt Romney, an aspiring presidential candidate, won in his home state of Michigan on Tuesday. Romney had a strong opponent, Rick Santorum, who was successful in winning 37 percent votes. Romney declared his victory by scoring 41 percent votes. Romney also marked his success in Arizona.

Both the states were crucial for Romney to win, particularly Michigan where he grew up when his father was governor.

In a speech to supporters, Romney said: “A week ago, it was just a week ago, the pundits and the pollsters, they were ready to count us out… We didn’t win by a lot, but we won by enough and that’s all that counts.”

On the other hand, Santorum described his defeat in Michigan still a success. He acknowledged that it was his main rival’s territory, but he was proud to give him a tough fight.

“This was going to be Romney’s night. The question was how big. And it wasn’t very big,” Santorum said.

It is evident that Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, has prevailed in gaining trust among the Republican foundation in Michigan. Santorum has constantly portrayed himself as a blue-collar son and grandson of Italian immigrants.

Romney; however, did not underestimate his opponent. He has openly criticized Santorum’s economic hauteur.

“What is most undistinguished in his campaign is his lack of understanding of the economy,” he said. “I think he is an economic lightweight. I don’t think he understands the process of job creating.”
