Durham Police are warning residents and businesses to beware of a potential computer help scam circulating to households within the Region.

Citizens are being contacted by telephone at home and the suspects claim they are from a computer firm such as Windows, Microsoft or Help PC Online Ltd.

The suspect then informs the homeowner they have noticed a software problem with their home computer and offer to fix the problem by directing the victim to a specific website, which in turn, allows them to gain access to your computer and potentially your personal information.

Police are warning this is a scam and strongly advise homeowners to hang-up the phone if they receive such a call and report the matter to the police for further investigation.

If you have already been subject of this scam, you can help protect your information by contacting a reputable computer dealer to check for viruses or malicious attacks.

Durham Police are appealing to the public to be aware of these circumstances and to report any suspicious activity for further investigation.
