The House of Commons has passed a bill that would put off Air Canada strike and force the staffers to report back to duty. The legislation passed 155-124 on Wednesday. It would directly force around 8,600 mechanics, baggage handlers and at least 3,000 Air Canada pilots to return to their jobs.

Labour Minister Lisa Raitt had been working hard to get the bill passed. She insisted the walkout by Air Canada staff was something Canada’s economy cannot afford. On the other hand, the opposition urges Harper government to stop interfering in the labor issues.

“We will take swift actions to ensure that Canada’s economic recovery is not negatively affected and that Canadians across the country who rely on air services are not unduly impacted,” Raitt said Monday.

Air Canada staffers argue that they have been underpaid. They demand their compensations and rewards they gave up a few years back in order to help the airline.

“The rights and wages of our members at Air Canada are being attacked by the federal government,” Dave Ritchie, head of the Canadian branch of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, said.

Ritchie said it’s a sad day for any federally regulated worker in Canada because this legislation says you do not have the right to strike.

“This will undermine free collective bargaining and poison labour relations across Canada,” added Ritchie.
