21-year-old Canadian goes the distance with world no. 3 at ATP Masters 1000 event
Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON) made the most of playing on one of tennis’ biggest stages against arguably the greatest player of all-time on Wednesday night in the third round of the BNP Paribas Open, an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event currently underway in Indian Wells, California.
The 21-year-old Canadian, seeded no. 27 in the tournament, pushed world no. 3 Roger Federer of Switzerland to the limit in an entertaining match. After just over two hours of high quality tennis, Federer completed an impressive comeback to score a 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-4 victory over Raonic to advance to the Round of 16.
Raonic benefited from the only service break of the opening set at 4-3 in the tiebreak to take a one set lead and put himself in position to pull off the upset. True to his champion’s form, Federer came back to win the second set comfortably and broke Raonic’s serve for the third time in the match at 3-3 in the final set with a perfectly executed slice backhand return on break point. Federer held his own serve the rest of the way to book his spot in the next round. Both players hit 10 aces in the match.
This marked the first meeting between the two players and the third match for Raonic against a Top 3 opponent, having played Rafael Nadal on two previous occasions.
Raonic’s next tournament will be the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami, another ATP Masters 1000 event set to get underway next week.
