U.S. women win U-20s; Canada and the U.S. also book tickets to World Cup.
With late goals from Maya Hayes (79′) and Chioma Ubogagu (89′), the United States rallied to defeat Canada 2-1 and win the CONCACAF U-20 Women’s Championship on Sunday in Panama City, Panama. It was a second-consecutive tournament title for the United States and its third overall .
The U.S. and Canada had earlier qualified for the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup with semifinal wins over Mexico (4-0) and Panama (6-0), respectively.
In the third-place game, Mexico beat Panama 5-0 to secure the confederation’s last World Cup berth. Natalia Gomez-Junco (25′, 90′ pen) and Yamile Franco (18′, 47′) scored two goals apiece, while Tanya Samarzich (44′) added the other. Gomez-Junco was the tournament’s top scorer with six goals.
The U.S., Canada and Mexico will represent CONCACAF at the World Cup in Japan from August 18-September 8, 2012.
CCL semifinalists to be decided this week
Monterrey, the Seattle Sounders and Isidro Metapan will take leads into the second legs of the CONCACAF Champions League (CCL) quarterfinals beginning on Tuesday.
Monterrey will host Morelia on Tuesday after a 3-1 away win a week ago. Humberto Suazo scored two goals for the defending champion.
Seattle will travel to Torreon, Mexico, to face Santos on Wednesday, following a tight 2-1 win at home last Wednesday. Brad Evans scored the 63rd minute winner for the MLS side.
Metapan will look to remain as the only Central American team in the tournament, when it travels to face Pumas in Mexico City on Thursday. Metapan won the first leg outlasted Pumas 2-1 on two goals from Mark Lester Blanco (27′, 49′).
In the first leg’s only game that ended without a winner, the LA Galaxy came from behind to tie host Toronto FC 2-2 last Wednesday before a Rogers Centre crowd of 47,658, the second-highest attended game in CCL history. Landon Donovan, the Gold Cup’s all-time leading scorer, netted the equalizer in the 89th minute. The Galaxy will host Toronto on Wednesday at The Home Depot Center in Carson, California.

Finals days of preparation for U-23 sides; Honduras and U.S. announce rosters
Participants in the finals of the CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualifying tournament started to announce their rosters and continued preparations for the March 22-April 2 event.
On Monday, the United States named a 19-player roster. Head coach Caleb Porter is expected to add a 20th player prior to March 20, the deadline for teams to submit their final rosters. The list includes 13 players from Major League Soccer, as well as foreign-based players such as Josh Gatt (Molde/Norway), Terrence Boyd (Borussia Dortmund/Germany) and Mix Diskerud (Gent/Belgium).
Honduras announced its final roster on Friday. Head coach Luis Fernando Suarez named a squad comprised largely of locally-based players, but also includes Eddie Hernandez (Hacken/Sweden) and Andy Najar (D.C. United/United States).
El Salvador is currently in the United States for a camp that began in the Washington D.C. area on Friday. In a friendly on Monday, the Central Americans defeated the University of Maryland 3-1. The Cuscatlecos will travel to Houston and face Honduras on March 17.
Four players from Isidro Metapan, including goal-scorer Mark Lester Blanco, will join the team following the club’s return leg against Pumas on Wednesday in the CONCACAF Champions League.
Mexico called up another roster for training this week before it travels to San Francisco for a match against Senegal on Saturday. The main news was the inclusion of Chivas and under-20 team forward Erick “Cubo” Torres.
After tying the Jamaica U-23s away 1-1 and losing to Jamaican club Portmore United 2-1 last week, Trinidad & Tobago opened its camp in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, with a 5-1 win over local club Honduras 5 Stars. Jamal Gay netted two goals for the young Soca Warriors.
The Trinidadians will also play Canada on Friday in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

CFU adopts new statutes
The Caribbean Football Union adopted new statutes at a three-day extraordinary congress that will enable the 40-member organization to move forward, including the election of new officers.
In a release dated March 8, the CFU said the keynote address by Cayman Islands federation president and CFU Normalization Committee head Jeffrey Webb was “received with energetic applause demonstrating early the solidarity of the CFU.”
The program included development session with each member by a FIFA delegation and meetings of the The CFU has been without a president since June, when Jack Warner resigned the post.
Borkowski hired to run Haitian women’s programs
The Haitian Football Federation has installed 49-year-old Shek Borkowski as technical director of its women’s national team program.
The Polish-born Borkowski replaces Ronald Luxieux and will coach the senior women’s team, plus guide the entire women’s program.
He joins Haiti after a second stint with FC Indiana of the Women’s Premier Soccer League in the United States. After four years of managing the club’s men’s team, Borkowski led FC Indiana’s women’s team to two WPSL titles and two U.S. Open Cup crowns. He left to coach women’s Russian side Zveda-2005 in 2009 before returning to FC Indiana last year.
