The students protested against tuition fee hike which has now turned Montreal into a vandalized city – broken windows, smashed up cars and violence all over the city walls – making it look like an uprising against the system.

On Wednesday night, an abrupt protest turned dreadful and police had to use batons, pepper spray and percussion bombs to control the wild demonstration. Within hours of passive protest, police marked the protest illegitimate and the situation got out of everyone’s hands.

Witnesses accuse a small group of activists for prompting the nuisance. According to the authorities, one of the student groups, C.L.A.S.S.E., went against the arrangement by protesting Tuesday and pardoning aggression on its website.

Education Minister Line Beauchamp said: “You can’t play both sides. I regret that this (group) has chosen its camp.”

According to Martine Desjardins, of the Quebec Federation of University Students, the early negotiations involved matters such as student aid and not tuition fees.

“People want us to talk about the tuition fee problems. We were ready to spend hours and more hours on this topic… We want students to understand the principle is to stay peaceful. We won’t go where the government wants us to go,” said Desjardins.
