Authorities in Florida are looking into a series of crashes that took lives of 11 motorists near Gainesville in January. According to the investigation so far, the Florida Highway Patrol is to be blamed for several blunders before the accidents took place. It failed to accurately watch the conditions on Interstate 75 as visibility deteriorated for riders.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement compiled a report on the orders of Gov. Rick Scott. The department could not establish any criminal intent on the part of Highway Patrol workforce; however, it suggested several modifications regarding road safety issues.

Furthermore, the report pointed out that the Highway Patrol staff poorly passed on information about the fire from the state forest service; were not in contact with weather and forest experts; and failed to vigilantly supervise the highway after it opened.

Apparently, Highway Patrol Sgt. Bruce Simmons was reluctant to reopen, but Lt. John Gourley did not want to keep the traffic waiting for too long. Several vehicles collided in six separate fatal crashes.

“I tried to tell them to leave that ‘Sum … buck closed and they wouldn’t listen to me,” said Simmons. “I said it will roll in faster than you can shut it down,” Simmons continued. “This crap wouldn’t have happened if he’d have listened.”
