Conservative MP Stephen Woodworth has sworn that he will not give up his beliefs even after the defeat of his motion for reconsidering the Criminal Code’s definition regarding when a human life begins. Woodworth is scheduled to address a press conference at 11:30 a.m. ET on the topic of his defeat and planning future steps despite it. If the motion had gotten majority votes in the parliamentary it would’ve been obliged to commute a committee for studying whether or not the Criminal Code’s definition of a human being out of date.
This Wednesday, Woodworth was at a press conference where he mentioned that he will still carry on to “speak out in defence of the Canadian values championed by Motion 312.” He added that “If possible, I’ll travel the country to talk about the very, very grave importance of enshrining in Canadian law the equal worth and dignity of every human being.”
During the voting in the parliament today, only eight of the cabinet ministers voted in favor of the motion which was not the majority. Surprisingly Rona Ambrose, minister for the status of women, also voted in favor of the motion although she had previously told the parliamentary commission that she intends to oppose it. NDP Leader Tom Mulcair was saddened by this act and said “In fact, a person who’s responsible for women’s rights is in a very delicate position when she votes against a decision by the Supreme Court of Canada which upheld the rights of women.”
