Media has discovered two armored cars specially shipped to India from Canada to include in the protocol shuttle of Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper, for his six-day and four-city tour this week in India.

This move is considered an unusual one for a Canadian Prime Minister as so far Harper has only transported in his own conveyance to two other countries, i.e. Haiti and Afghanistan. This Sunday morning, a black sport-utility vehicle and a black luxury sedan, having number plates of Ontario, steered on the streets of India within the motorcade of Stephen Harper. Harper was previously scheduled to travel in the specially built ubiquitous Hindustan Motors Ambassador car, i.e. a vintage-looking white sedan.

The Director of Communications of PM Harper, Andrew MacDougall, answered all the queries regarding the armored vehicles of the RCMP, claiming that it was on the exclusive request of the Mounties, and not the Prime Minister’s Office, to bring the security up to level at home and abroad. The RCMP is not giving a specific answer to clarify whether it was their decision to ship over the cars.

The media relations officer CPL. Lucy Shorey stated in an emailed statement that “the deployment of RCMP resources are dictated by operational requirements, including public and officer safety considerations, and a threat assessment of the events/environments.” Shorey mentioned that “for security reasons, details on the security plans will not be discussed.” Even apart from the prime minister’s travelling protocol, the overall personal security of Harper also seems to have been beefed up recently.
