Numerous politicians of Quebec have positively welcomed the decision of Gérald Tremblay for quitting his public post as the mayor of Montreal. Tremblay announced his resignation yesterday in the middle of endless allegations made against him at the Charbonneau Commission. Tremblay publicly announced at city hall that “I am leaving public life.”

The Municipal Affairs Minister, Sylvain Gaudreault, claimed that it was the first step towards rebuilding the confidence of Montrealers in their city leadership. Gaudreault boasted about the 25-year-long career of Tremblay in public service and asserted so he respects Tremblay’s decision to resign. Gaudreault was speaking at a press conference on Tuesday when he mentioned that “he took this decision after several days of reflection. I think he had a lot of pressure on his shoulders.” He added that “we understand and we share the indignation of Montrealers, but we also want to assure them that we will accompany Montreal and its administration … through its transition.”

Projet Montréal leader, Richard Bergeron, stated that “he took a very courageous decision last night and he did that with a kind of an elevation of tone. It was very well done. He succeeded in his exit as mayor of Montreal.” Bergeron did not comment whether he believes Tremblay is innocent or not.

Even the Official Opposition Leader, Louise Harel, reportedly claimed that she was satisfied with Tremblay’s decision, though she didn’t place full blame on the mayor. She asserted that “he was a victim of all the people, his entourage.”
